About Voices Chorale NJ
Voices Chorale NJ is an auditioned chorus of about 40 members from New Jersey and
Pennsylvania, several of whom sang together in the original Voices Chorale, founded by Dr. Lyn Ransom thirty-five years ago to bring outstanding music to the public, inspire audiences, and provide performance opportunities for skilled singers. Their varied repertoire included music from across the eras and around the world, masterworks, and premieres by American composers.
Over the years, the organization sponsored an annual Young Composers Project to encourage young musicians ages 5-12 to compose music and lyrics. Voices Chorale collaborated with diverse groups, including the Trenton Children's Choir, The Absalom Jones Inspirational Choir of Trinity Cathedral in Trenton, NJ, and the Princeton High School Choir. Voices Chorale also performed outreach concerts at senior residences in the greater Princeton area.
During the 2018-2019 season, Voices Chorale NJ grew its membership and received non-profit status to offer its members and the community the same high-quality musical experiences and educational opportunities. Under the direction of Dr. David A. McConnell, the group had very successful Christmas concerts in December 2018 and 2019, and performed a concert of varied musical interpretations of Shakespearean texts in May 2019.
As did many groups, Voices had to pause from rehearsing in March 2020 due to the pandemic. We persevered together and continued to enjoy our music and each other's company over the internet! In Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 we offered members and the public online classes in vocal technique and choral music history, and we held intimate online concerts by masterful performers.
In Fall 2021, we began rehearsing in person again and performed a near sell-out Winter Holiday concert in December. We offered in-person attendance and an online streaming option.
Our Spring 2022 Concert, “Singing for Peace” performed with the Berks Sinfonietta chamber orchestra, offered a variety of pieces from Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Contemporary periods which express the longing for peace through distinct approaches. The program included Handel’s rarely performed Anthem on the Peace. selections by Mendelssohn and Haydn and contemporary pieces including And for a Breath by Ryan Main, A Prayer of Compassion by Gwyneth Walker, and 1000 Beautiful Things by Annie Lennox of the Eurhythmics.
