About Voices Chorale NJ

Picture
Voices Chorale NJ is an auditioned chorus of about 40 members from New Jersey and Pennsylvania.  We welcome talented singers from diverse backgrounds and experiences.  Our mission is to bring outstanding music to the public, inspire audiences, offer performance opportunities and community for singers, and provide high-quality music education programs for youth and adults. Our performances showcase collaborations with internationally acclaimed composers, local children's choirs, chamber orchestras, and accomplished soloists, enriching our dynamic repertoire.

Artistic Director Dr. David A. McConnell has led our nonprofit chorus since 2018, programming various music, from contemporary choral arrangements to Baroque masterworks. Continuing the traditions of founding Artistic Director Dr. Lyn Ransom, McConnell programs repertoire from across the eras and around the world, while providing a friendly environment for singers to strive for musical excellence and harmony.

Recent performance highlights:
  • An American Tapestry - Voices of Many: Featuring "The Hope of Loving" by Jake Runestad, accompanied by string quartet, plus American songbook classics, spirituals, and choral works to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
  • The Gift of Being Together: Featuring the regional premiere of "A Garland for Christmas" by contemporary British composer John Whittaker, along with delightful settings of traditional carols.
  • Requiem x 2:  Two powerful musical settings of the requiem mass: the monumental Mozart Requiem, left incomplete by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1791; and the Requiem by Brazilian composer José Maurício Nunes Garcia, completed in 1816. Both works were accompanied by the 21-piece Berks Sinfonietta orchestra.
  • Sing Out, My Soul: In collaboration with the Trenton Children's Chorus. Featuring Vivaldi's masterful "Gloria" performed with chamber orchestra, and contemporary compositions and arrangements to celebrate the season.
Education and outreach:
  • Young Composers Project: restarted in spring 2023, with composer Ken Guilmartin leading a group of children 5-12 years old to compose pieces sung by the choir or the youngsters themselves.
  • Choral Scholars: each year, a group of 2-6 entering professional singers rehearse and perform with the choir, leading warm-ups, assisting the director, and leading their section of the ensemble.
  • Assistant Conductor: a young professional has the opportunity to conduct some pieces with the chorale under the direction and mentorship of the artistic director.
  • Performances: at local colleges, senior residences, and previously, on a tour of Europe.
